Susan Wojcicki, YouTube's CEO for the past nine years, is stepping down with immediate effect. She has nominated Neal Mohan, the company's Chief Product Officer for the previous seven years, as her successor.
"I've decided to step down as YouTube's CEO and begin a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects I'm passionate about," she wrote on the business blog. Wojcicki will now serve as an advisor to Google and Alphabet.
Wojcicki praises Mohan's efforts in developing the hugely successful YouTube TV, as well as overseeing YouTube Music, Premium, and Shorts. She also mentions Mohan as the leader of the company's Trust and Safety team, which will become increasingly more crucial as "AI's promises," as she puts it, become a potential area of growth.
It marks the end of an era for YouTube, which faced public scrutiny throughout Wojcicki's tenure for its handling of hate speech, content moderation, and misinformation. When she joined the platform in 2014, it had just recently surpassed one billion subscribers, and "YouTubers" were still regarded curiosities. YouTube now has 2.5 billion viewers globally, and YouTube artists have turned their channels into full-fledged businesses.
Wojcicki, a friend of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, was one of Google's first employees, "managing marketing, co-creating Google Image Search, leading Google's first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense's creation, working on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, serving as SVP of Ads" before taking over YouTube.
